Fail better! Philosophical Summer School

Organisers: Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana

Venue: Faculty of Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Date: 26–30 August 2019

The summerschool which is to take place at the end of August 2019 is part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Ljubljana University. The celebration is a very good occasion for the University to present its achievements and its current activities, and in this framework the Faculty of Arts wants to provide an international platform for three prominent internationally renowned scholars who will fully engage themselves in presenting their new work. During the five days of its duration the program will offer two sessions per day, each session consisting of a lecture with ample time for discussion. Each of the lecturers will give three extensive lectures with one common session to conclude the program, thus ten sessions in all. The number of participants is limited to 120.

The title is taken from the famous quote by Samuel Beckett, “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” (Worstward Ho) The title points to a stark sense of failure of critical thought and of emancipatory politics, given the rise of new populism, the emergence of previously unthinkable figures of leaders, the looming social and economic contradictions, the apocalyptic perspectives of global and ecological catastrophes etc. The failure is a starting point that instigates a new engagement of thought.

The three lecturers have long formed a group which has become internationally known as ‘the Ljubljana School’, and the program will to start with revisit some of the basic assets that have constituted the presuppositions of the group, and then bring them to the actuality of the present turmoil.

Mednarodna konferenca: Na vzhod! LGBTQ+ književnost v Vzhodni Evropi

Filozofska fakulteta Univerze v Ljubljani in ŠKUC najavljata mednarodno konference o LGBTQ+ književnosti v Vzhodni Evropi, ki bo potekala 25. in 26. oktobra 2018 v Ljubljani.

Call for papers - International conference: Go East! LGBTQ+ Literature in Eastern Europe

Organisers: Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and ŠKUC Ljubljana, Slovenia

Venue: Faculty of Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Date: 25–26 October 2018

Abstract submission deadline: 31 March 2018

LGBTQ+ lives have always and unavoidably been shaped by the innumerable cultural and historical transformations which have also had an indelible influence on LGBTQ+ writing and reading. Today, due to the remarkable progress made in recent years, it may seem that LGBTQ+ literature has been safely mainstreamed and commodified. Moreover, the impressive work of LGBTQ+ theorists and writers has been widely recognised and institutionalised. At least in the West.

What about the East? How have LGBTQ+ literary production and scholarship developed in Eastern Europe? Has there been a pink curtain separating the supposedly liberal West from the less than welcoming East? Why is Eastern Europe (perceived as) less accepting of sexual and gender non-normativity? Has it always been like that? And how does that show in literature?

After decades of LGBTQ+ literary studies, mostly originating in the West, what is the state of affairs in Eastern Europe?

The conference will focus on LGBTQ+ literature from Eastern Europe, both contemporary and past.
